Packing for a Road Trip With a Baby

Packing for a Road Trip With a Baby
A couple weeks ago, we took our almost-4-month old baby to LA on his first road trip.  If it was just me and Steve, our luggage would be very light since we were only staying for the long weekend.  However, a baby needs more than just a change of clothes.

This list is for a 4 days/3 night trip to LA.  It is a summer packing list, so obviously it will be different for a winter road trip.

Essentials

  • 30 diapers
  • 1 box of wet wipes
  • 2 swaddle blankets
  • Thick blanket (to put on the floor for tummy time)
  • 1 pacifiers (in case one is lost, there’s another one for back-up)
  • 4-5 burp clothes

Clothes

  • 3 short sleeve onesies
  • 1 long sleeve onesie
  • 1 kimono oneness for sleeping (or whatever your baby usually wears to sleep)
  • 2 shirts
  • 2 short pants
  • 1 long pant
  • 1 jacket
  • Sunblock safe for infant (very important not to let the baby get sunburn)
  • Sun hat

Bath & nail care

  • Head-to-toe wash
  • Comb
  • Nail clipper / filer

Formula

  • Bottle
  • Baby formula packs (Even if nursing, it’s always good to bring along some formula in case of unexpected issues.)
  • Cleaning brush

Diaper bag

  • Nursing cover
  • Swaddle blankets
  • Burp cloth
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Linoleum
  • Rash cream
  • Purell

First aid

  • Band-aid
  • Medications
  • Vitamins

Others

  • Stroller
  • Car seat
  • Baby carrier (for places where a stroller is inconvenient)
  • Nursing pillow
  • Pak ‘n play & bassinet (for sleeping)
  • Camera & charger
  • Phone & charger

It’s definitely not easy taking a baby this young for a long road trip.  Even though the drive from SF to LA should only take 6 hours, with a baby, it was close to 8 hours.  Luckily, the baby did not complain too much and was mostly asleep in the car.  At the end I was glad we made this trip, and am hoping for more trips to come!
